FAQ
About the treatment
How many dosing sessions will I need?
The number of sessions is always tailored to your clinical needs and personal goals, and is decided in conjunction with your psychiatrist. We work with reference protocols that serve as the basis for planning:
-
Infusion Therapy: Typically an initial cycle of 4 sessions carried out over 2 to 3 weeks.
-
KAP Therapy: An introductory course typically includes 4 dosage sessions and 4 integration sessions, preceded by at least 2 preparation sessions.
Being a focused intervention, the complete treatment typically lasts between 1 to 3 monthsFollowing this initial cycle, we jointly assess the clinical response to decide on the need for booster or maintenance sessions, always respecting the pace of your recovery.
Can I do this therapy simultaneously with my psychotherapy?
Yes, and we strongly recommend that you do so. Our intervention does not replace your current therapeutic process; on the contrary, it acts as a catalyst that can enhance the results of your long-term psychotherapy.
-
Clinical Articulation: With your permission, we maintain an open channel of communication with your attending psychotherapist or psychiatrist. This collaboration ensures that... insights and that the changes initiated at Liminal Minds are integrated and deepened in your regular follow-up.
-
Complementary Focus: While our protocol is a brief intervention focused on specific aspects of neuroplasticity and experience, we encourage you to maintain an ongoing therapeutic space for the maintenance of your well-being and personal growth.
Is the treatment compatible with other psychiatric medications?
Yes, in the vast majority of cases. Unlike other psychedelics under study, the neuromodulator used in Liminal Minds can be safely administered while maintaining your usual medication.
-
Antidepressant Synergy: In the treatment of depression, evidence suggests that continuing your current antidepressant may even enhance the therapeutic effect of treatment in the early stages.
-
Necessary Adjustments: Some substances, such as benzodiazepines (anxiolytics) or the lamotrigineThese factors can affect the effects of the medication. In these cases, our psychiatrist will discuss with you the possibility of reducing or temporarily suspending these medications to maximize results, in coordination with your attending psychiatrist.
-
Medical Monitoring: You should never change or discontinue your medication without guidance. All decisions regarding your medication regimen are carefully made during the assessment consultation and monitored throughout the entire process.
Can I drink alcohol while I am undergoing treatment?
The clinical recommendation is that you should not consume alcohol or non-prescribed psychoactive substances during the 48 hours before and after your dosage session.
-
Impact on Neuroplasticity: Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant that can directly interfere with the "window of opportunity" for new neural connections that treatment opens. Drinking during this period can diminish the therapeutic effect and slow recovery.
-
Safety and Side Effects: Consuming alcohol increases the likelihood of unpleasant side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, or headaches after the session.
-
The Therapeutic Ideal: Although a 48-hour restriction is the safety standard, we ideally recommend abstinence or maximum reduction of consumption throughout the entire course of treatment (1 to 3 months). This period of "biological clarity" allows you to better observe subtle changes in your mood and behavior.
What are the contraindications for the treatment?
Safety is the central pillar of our work. Although the neuromodulator used is largely safe in a clinical setting, there are specific conditions that prevent treatment or require increased caution:
Psychological Contraindications:
-
Active symptoms of psychosis or a history of psychotic disorders.
-
Active manic phase in Bipolar Disorder.
-
Severe substance use disorders (requiring prior stabilization).
Physical Contraindications:
-
Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
-
Uncontrolled high blood pressure (since the medication can temporarily raise blood pressure).
-
High-risk cardiovascular disease (recent heart attack, unstable angina).
-
Other rare conditions that increase the risk of complications with the administration of the drug.
Important Note: Final eligibility is always determined by our psychiatrist at Assessment ConsultationIn cases of relative contraindication, the doctor will assess the risk-benefit ratio and may consult with your primary care physician to ensure that the treatment is feasible and safe for you.
Can the medication create addiction?
No, not when used in the clinical and therapeutic context that we offer. Scientific evidence demonstrates that, in controlled doses and at appropriate intervals, the neuromodulator does not induce physical dependence or cravings for consumption.cravingsoutside of therapy.
-
Use as a tool, not as an end in itself. At Liminal Minds, the compound is used as a tool to facilitate learning and personal transformation, not as a solution for daily or continuous use.
-
Security and Supervision: The risk of abuse is associated with recreational and erratic use. In our settingThe administration is strictly monitored by doctors, which minimizes behavioral patterns that lead to addiction.
-
Consolidation vs. Dependency: If there is a relapse of symptoms after a good initial response, the doctor may suggest booster sessions. This is not a sign of dependence, but rather a consolidation strategy to maintain long-term biological stability.
Regarding dosage sessions
Do I have to fast before the session?
Yes. We recommend a fast from solid foods of at least, 4 hours before the session.
-
Comfort and Safety: This measure is essential to minimize the risk of nausea or gastric discomfort that the medication may occasionally cause, allowing you to focus entirely on your experience without physical distractions.
-
Hydration: You can (and should) stay hydrated with water until the session begins, but we ask that you avoid other beverages during the fasting period.
-
Post-Session Revitalization: After the treatment, and as soon as you feel ready, we will have a small snack available for you to help you regain energy and return to your usual state comfortably.
What are the recommendations before the session?
To ensure your experience is as smooth and rewarding as possible, we recommend that you approach the day of your session as a time for rest and self-care.
-
Create Space for Introspection: If possible, reserve the morning of the session (or the day before) for activities that promote calmness, such as meditation, free writing (journalingListening to music or taking a walk in nature. These moments help align your intentions for the experience.
-
Physical Comfort: Bring comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. During the session, you will be reclining and relaxed; feeling physically at ease is essential for a deep connection.
-
Support Network: Plan your day so that after the session you can be in a familiar environment and, if you wish, in the company of someone who makes you feel safe and calm.
-
Logistics: Make sure you have no urgent or stressful commitments scheduled for the hours following the session. The "post-session" period is an important processing time that should not be rushed.
How long does a session take?
A full session lasts, on average, 2 hours and 15 minutesThe route through the clinic is designed so that you never feel rushed, being divided into three distinct moments:
-
Welcome and Preparation (approx. 30 min): The "arrival" moment. We briefly discuss their current state, reiterate the intentions for the session, and prepare the environment (music, lighting, and physical comfort).
-
Dosing Experience (approx. 1 hour): This is the acute effect period of the neuromodulator. Throughout this time, you will be in a state of deep relaxation, under medical monitoring and, in the KAP modality, accompanied in person by your Liminal Minds therapist.
-
Recovery and Initial Integration (approx. 45 min): As the effect wears off, you will have time to calmly return to your usual state of wakefulness. We offer a small snack and, if you feel comfortable, you can share your first impressions of the experience before you are discharged.
Security Note: Although the active effect lasts for about 60 minutes, our team only discharges you when your vital signs and alertness have fully returned to normal.
What are the side effects of the treatment?
The neuromodulator used has a high clinical safety profile...especially at the subanesthetic (very low) doses we administer. Most people do not experience significant adverse effects, and when they do occur, they are typically... benign and transient, disappearing shortly after the session.
During administration, the most common side effects may include:
-
Sensory: Slight dizziness, blurred vision, dry mouth, or numbness in extremities.
-
Physicists: Impaired motor coordination (therefore we ask that you do not drive), nausea, or a slight and temporary increase in blood pressure.
-
General: A decrease in body temperature or mild headaches after the session.
Active Security: During the dosing session, your blood pressure and heart rate are monitored by our medical team, according to your risk level. If you experience any discomfort (such as nausea), we have protocols and supportive medication ready to act immediately and restore your well-being.
Do I need a companion for the sessions?
Yes. With exceptions, infusion sessions require the presence of a companion when leaving treatment. After the session, some sensory sensitivity may persist, so it is recommended that you be monitored until you get home.
Can I drive after the session?
No. For medical and legal safety reasons, it is strictly prohibited to drive any motorized vehicle or operate heavy machinery in the area. next 24 hours to your dosage session.
-
Recovery Time: Although the subjective effect of the medication wears off quickly, your reflexes, motor coordination, and depth perception may remain subtly altered for several hours.
-
Road Safety: You should only resume driving the day after the session, after a full and restorative night's sleep.
-
Planning: We ask that you arrange your transport to the clinic (and your return) taking this restriction into account.
What are the recommendations after the session?
The hours following the session are a period of particular receptiveness and calm. To honor this state, we recommend:
-
Rest and Tranquility: Plan the rest of your day with predictable and relaxing activities. Many people experience a rapid improvement in their emotional state; enjoy this well-being without the pressure of being productive.
-
Postpone Important Decisions: Although you may feel a newfound clarity, avoid making significant life decisions (professional or relational) for the next 24 to 48 hours. Allow the experience to settle first.
-
Registration without Interpretation: If you feel inclined, record your experience through writing, drawing, or voice notes. Don't worry about finding immediate or logical meanings; the goal is simply to "capture" the sensations and images.
-
Trust the Process: The deeper meanings and concrete changes will naturally manifest themselves throughout the integration sessions and in your daily life. For now, your only task is to rest and integrate.
Regarding the clinical decision
What is the difference between Infusion Therapy and KAP Assisted Psychotherapy?
KAP Assisted Therapy has been applied and researched for over 50 years.Infusion Therapy, like other forms of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, is a relatively recent biomedical model with over 25 years of research behind it. Both approaches prove to be equally effective in rapidly reducing symptoms...such as depressed mood or suicidal ideation. In either case, we follow rigorous clinical protocols and ensure maximum comfort and safety for the patient.
The difference lies in the paradigm that guides each treatment:
➤ Infusion Therapy: The Gold Standard of Evidence-Based Medicine
This approach represents the most robust approach in modern psychopharmacology.
-
Consolidated Evidence: Infusion therapy is based on more than 25 years of scientific research and controlled clinical trials (RCTs). This data demonstrates, with the highest level of evidence, its effectiveness in the treatment of depression, and there is emerging evidence of effectiveness in other indications.
-
Neurological Focus: It is a direct intervention in the nervous system. The medication acts as a potent neuromodulator to restore biological balance and functionality, making it ideal for those seeking robust clinical relief focused on symptom reduction.
➤ KAP Assisted Therapy: Integrating Values-Based Medicine
At Liminal Minds, we offer KAP Assisted Therapy. fundamental clinical reasons, which operate independently of the presence or absence of statistical data. While Infusion focuses on neurobiology and Evidence-Based Medicine, KAP adds the paradigm of Values-Based Medicine It focuses on the human experience of self-discovery, which is an intrinsic part of Mental Health and Psychotherapy.
Our six clinical pillars for choosing KAP are:
Pillar 1 - Evidence-Based Medicine: Safety, Efficacy, Effectiveness, and Durability
- Efficacy and Safety. In addition to the solid evidence of the drug's effectiveness as monotherapy (Infusion Therapy), there is also evidence from multiple clinical trials and effectiveness studies showing that when the drug is administered with psychotherapy (KAP-Assisted Therapy) it has equivalent efficacy in reducing symptoms.
- Durability of Results. In depression in general, there is robust evidence that combining psychotherapy with antidepressant treatment increases the durability of long-term therapeutic results compared to antidepressant monotherapy. In KAP therapy, it is not yet possible to draw conclusions about comparative durability. Direct comparative studies between Infusion Therapy (monotherapy) and KAP Therapy (therapy combined with psychotherapy) are awaited. follow-up above 6 or 12 months.
Pillar 2 - Clinical Navigation: Protection in Vulnerability. The neuromodulator induces dissociative states in 40-80% of cases. KAP is the indicated protocol whenever there is a risk of adverse psychological reactions, acute suicidal ideation, or re-experiencing trauma. In KAP, the specialized preparation and dedicated presence of a therapist, which comprise the clinical navigation, ensure that the patient is protected in a state of high sensitivity and suggestibility, minimizing unnecessary suffering and guaranteeing immediate emotional support and empowerment to manage any intense emotional reactions.
Pillar 3 - Humanist Imperative: Preserving Agency at the Frontier of Human Understanding. The psychedelic experience is neither solely nor primarily an organic or biological experience, nor solely a perceptual, sensory, or aesthetic one. It is an experience that operates profoundly at the level of understanding and thought, typically transcending the boundaries of what organizes us as humans – our common sense. To make sense of this experience and, through it, discover important new understandings, or, in the face of the incomprehensible to the human mind, to be able to find peace, is a humanist imperative. In addition to the biological and passive antidepressant effects of Infusion Therapy, KAP promotes the discovery and attribution of meaning (meaning-makingThe patient ceases to be a spectator of their brain chemistry and becomes an active agent capable of understanding and guiding themselves through their transformation process.
Pillar 4 - Existential Direction: Leveraging Synaptic Plasticity. The substance opens a "window of opportunity" in the brain for the reorganization and creation of new structural or functional neural circuits. Psychotherapy here acts as the "scaffolding" that directs this plasticity towards functional changes and new learning, enabling biological potential to translate into life changes.
Pillar 5 - Epistemic Humility: Openness and Prudence in the Face of the Unknown. At Liminal Minds, we recognize that the psychedelic experience can challenge the foundations of our knowledge about mind and matter, demanding profound humility in the face of what we do not yet understand. We understand neuroscience and psychotherapeutic models as valuable tools and rigorous maps, but we treat them as fragments of knowledge that experience itself expands and, at times, questions. Instead of forcing the patient's experience to fit into pre-defined theories, we remain open to the unknown informing science, accepting that our current certainties are only the starting point for a broader understanding.
I don't live in Portugal. Can I get treatment?
Currently, to ensure maximum safety and effectiveness, our protocols require that patients reside in Portugal and have a stable social support network.
This requirement is based on two pillars:
-
Security and Support: It is essential to have a local support network to meet your physical or psychological needs in case of an emergency.
-
Continuity of Care: Treatment doesn't end with the dosing session. We require integrated follow-up and a... follow-up In-person meetings that ensure the consolidation of the results obtained.
The Exception for Maintenance Treatments: We make an exception for travelers who already have regular infusion sessions in their home countries and require a maintenance session during their stay in Portugal. In these cases, the conditions are:
-
The patient must be clinically stable.
-
A detailed clinical report from the physician responsible for the current treatment is required.
-
The assessment consultation at Liminal Minds should ideally be scheduled one month in advance of your arrival in Portugal.
